Geraldine Ferraro: One “ism” deserves another
Geraldine Ferraro let this one fly in an interview:
“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position,” she continued. “And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.” Ferraro does not buy the notion of Obama as the great reconciler.
Using her logic, I can make the following statements:
Geraldine Ferraro could not claim ownership to the distinction of being the only woman to run for Vice President if it hadn’t been politically expedient to nominate her. She’s damn lucky the Democrats were counting on the women’s vote and luckier still that she happened to be from New York, where she was expendable if she’d actually been elected.
Hillary Clinton wouldn’t be in her position right now if she hadn’t been married to Bill Clinton. She’s damn lucky she was, and luckier still that she got some political capital to spend by standin’ by her man.
Those are pretty offensive statements, aren’t they? All three of them. Anyone with half a brain can see how full of bias and prejudice all three are, beginning with the leadoff from Geraldine herself.
So once again the Hillary surrogates pull out the race card and play it on the eve of a primary in a Southern state. Is it an effort to pander to the racist white groups in Mississippi? Or just an incredibly blatant blunder?
Whatever it is, the fact is that Geraldine Ferraro ran on a failed and lifeless ticket and is stuck in the “poor women are victims and everyone’s sexist” phase. Forget about it. As I pointed out, there is truth in the two statements I used to illustrate her flawed logic, but that doesn’t make them true. It does however, expose Geraldine’s inner racism.
