The Rev. Joel Hunter, pastor of a nondenominational megachurch in Longwood, Fla., said he resigned as the coalition’s incoming president because its board of directors disagreed with his plan to broaden the organization’s agenda. In addition to opposing abortion and same-sex marriage, Hunter, 58, wanted to take on such issues as poverty, global warming and HIV/AIDS.

I’m actually relieved to read this. It proves that the Christian Coalition is rapidly becoming toothless and ineffective. Joel Hunter is a well-respected pastor and the second leader to resign this year. The CC is a negative and embarrassing voice on the political landscape, and I hope they fade rapidly into oblivion.

Update: It seems that Pastor Rick Warren is being trashed for inviting Barack Obama to his AIDS/HIV summit at Saddleback this weekend. Good for him for standing up to the bullies.
