Energy as a Climate Changer?

June 24, 2008 · Posted in Domestic Policy

The only climate change the GOP expects from the energy issue is a political climate change, which if I have any say in the matter, won’t happen. From SFGate.com:

“Energy is actually a huge opportunity for Republicans,” said Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., who chairs the Senate Republicans’ re-election campaign. “Energy has the opportunity to change the climate if it’s done right.”

A recent Gallup Poll found that 57 percent of Americans would support drilling in offshore or wilderness areas that are currently off-limits to drilling, while 41 percent oppose the idea. Frank Newport, the poll’s editor in chief, contends that Republicans’ push for more drilling is now “generally in sync with majority American public opinion.”

Hey, 57% supporting drilling, why not get a clue now about what you support. I have to believe you’re just ignorant and not stupid. You REALLY support increased domestic production, which can be accomplished RIGHT. NOW. You just think the protected areas have to be opened to increase production, but they don’t.

Here’s an area that would be forever marred by offshore drilling.

Mugu Too

So to the 57% of you out there who think this is somehow something that will help, let me reiterate:

  1. Offshore drilling will not help you offset the gas prices you’re seeing right now.
  2. Offshore drilling will not change the need to shift to alternative forms of energy.
  3. Offshore drilling would require more refineries to be built. Are you willing to have a refinery in your backyard?
  4. Offshore drilling would cause many coastal areas to be hard-hit economically as a result of tourism loss, effectively destroying the coastal economy.
  5. We have a DUTY to preserve these areas and find alternative ways to supply and conserve energy./li>

Got it? Good. Now go spread the news to the other bunch of you who are not stupid, but must definitely be ignorant.

These really are the facts, not some political spin. Offshore drilling only makes it LOOK like you're doing something about high gas prices.

"A 2004 study by the government's Energy Information Administration (EIA) found that drilling in ANWR would trim the price of gas by 3.5 cents a gallon by 2027. (If oil prices continue to skyrocket, the savings would be greater, but not by much.)" - Time/CNN http://is.gd/F8J

Meanwhile, experts on the issue are currently giving testimony before Congress:

"The price of retail gasoline could fall by half, to around $2 a gallon, within 30 days of passage of a law to limit speculation in energy-futures markets, four energy analysts told Congress on Monday." - The Wall Street Journal http://is.gd/Esv

This isn't spin. This is the bloody Wall Street Journal - bastion of influence in all manners of money and the economy. Someone is talking straight about the Gas Price crisis and resultant inflation in our economy, and it certainly ain't the de-railed "express."

    Your choice:

3.5 CENTS per gallon savings 10 YEARS from now after how many ecological disasters?

    OR

2 DOLLARS per gallon savings in 2 MONTHS ???

There's one more important point to make. These offshore deposits - they are just that - deposits, a savings account for our future. There's no reason to pump it out of the ground now. After all, we're STILL filling up the Strategic Reserve, although that was ~supposed~ to come to a stop.

If tax incentives for clean renewable energy, investment in green research and technology, and smart infrastructure improvements were enacted (as Democrats have been pushing for for DECADES), we would make a serious dent in the demand for oil well before any increased supply would flow from the proposed wells. More Jobs, Less Global Warming, Less Foreign Dependence, Fewer Oil Spills, etc. In other words, a step towards a SUSTAINABLE America.

This REALLY IS a no-brainer folks.
