Comments switching to Disqus

May 24, 2008 · Posted in Notes

The amount of spam I’ve been getting here necessitates a change. I really like Disqus and have been using it on my personal blog for about six months. One of the best aspects of the system is the ability to moderate posts via email, and also for you all to join the community and the discussion via several different avenues — Friendfeed, Facebook, email, or right here on the blog.

The disadvantage is that it hides all comments made on the blog in the past which means that discussions made as recently as an hour ago cannot be viewed. For that, I apologize but I think now is the best time to make the transition.

I’ve decided to set the Disqus settings for new posts or posts with no comments for the time being so as to preserve the comments made to recent discussions. In about a week, I’ll close comments on those and transition entirely over to Disqus.

Thanks to everyone for the great conversations here lately!

  • i use disqus on my seldom-used tumblr blog, and i am completely happy with them -- over there. on my MT blog, which i did lose quite a bit of comments in the last import, i'm glad that somewhere in a text file on my hard drive i DO have everything archived.

i'd like Disqus to offer a local backup option (even though i admit the thought of having to work out something to DO with such an archive would be daunting, i'd still like the option).
  • I'd just import the RSS feed into the database if I had to. I had to rebuild an entire blog that way, and I'd have to do it again with comments if there were a compelling reason to do so.

So tell me, should I enable video comments?
  • It also makes it easier for the commenters with the added bonus of feeding friendfeed.
  • True enough, though I tend to agree with Steve on FF. My main reason for making the switch is to stop the spam and not filter folks like you who have something to say. :)
