Damn America, Indeed
Everyone’s all in a twist about Jeremiah Wright and his fiery sermons. Just for the record, my pastor has many opinions I disagree with. Why do I keep going to that church? Because I love the people there and they love me. Don’t assume that any pastor speaks for the congregation. Pastors preach what they think we need to hear. It doesn’t mean we listen, or that we follow like mindless drones.
However, since the press won’t quit screaming about this despite the meltdown of our financial markets, the nearing of the 4,000th American war death in Iraq, tornadoes ripping through major metropolitan areas and riots in Tibet, let’s get a little bit of perspective, shall we?
From Francis Schaeffer, one of the founding fathers of the Religious Right, this:
There does come a time when force, even physical force, is appropriate… A true Christian in Hitler’s Germany and in the occupied countries should have defied the false and counterfeit state. This brings us to a current issue that is crucial for the future of the church in the United States, the issue of abortion… It is time we consciously realize that when any office commands what is contrary to God’s law it abrogates it’s authority. And our loyalty to the God who gave this law then requires that we make the appropriate response in that situation…
Imagine what the hue and cry would have been from the Wright-bashers if this had come from Wright. And before everyone goes nuts about his statement that we were responsible for 9/11, let’s be clear: We were.
It’s time for the press to quit beating their invisible breastplates of righteousness and admit that this is all part of the agenda to make race more of an issue than it is.
