Hastert and Reynolds: Too late for damage control

September 30, 2006 · Posted in Zealotry

The political blame-tossing between Tom Reynolds and Dennis Hastert over Mark Foley’s foolishness is becoming a partisan political morass.

While these guys toss blame back and forth at each other over not doing something sooner, the real issues are being buried under a rock.

Let’s be clear here: The author and champion of legislation intended to protect children from predators is a predator himself. Hastert was notified that there was a problem but swept it under the rug, probably in the name of protecting the Republican chokehold over the House of Representatives.

The party that claims the high moral ground is as immoral as they get. Hypocrites.

  • bonica_babe,

Foley's sexual orientation has been one of the worst-kept secrets in US government. Ordinarily I'd shrug and say "who cares?", but having suffered through far too much unwarranted righteousness with the Monica scandal and now having to tolerate the Bush revisionist party line on Iraq, I am no longer willing to overlook any hypocritical act on the part of the "family values" party.

There's lots and lots more to say about this one, I think.

Well, there are a few GOP house members who can skip going to the gym for awhile - they'll get plenty of exercise throwing each other under buses. Fortunately, there is a good chance some other shorts - er, shoes - will drop. Most likely there are some other witnesses - the pages affected and their parents. If any of them went directly to Hastert, the cats could come crawling out of the bag.

I am curious to cross reference those US reps who knew and didn't act first and foremost to protect the pages (and, incidentally, the reputation of the House of Representatives) and their past statements and actions. For example, what did they have to say about the AMBER law, or the provision to prevent sexual predation over the internet? And have they waxed righteously indignant about Bill Clinton's covering up his activities with Monica Lewinsky? Somebody needs to document whether there are any real family values going on, or just a bunch of posturing politicians.

I tried to access the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus web page today to get a list of members, and it came up as "NOT FOUND". Is that just a coincidence or is it damage control?

If Rodney Alexander can fire one of his staffers for writing love letters to jailed convicted murderer Scott Peteson (and he did), and if he's concerned enough about internet sexual predation of minors to support a law against it (and he did), then I know he's familiar enough with ethics violations and the law to realize that he shouldn't just pass this off and then forget it. Especially when press reports say that Mark Foley's sexual orientation was an open secret in the House.

The false ingenuousness of the House members just doesn't cut it. Caught in a lie here, they will destroy their credibility for any other denial they wish to issue in the future.
